Halloween Doesn't Have To Be Scary
Halloween will be different this year, though the desire to get into the spirit of the season is strongly felt. Depending on where you live, activities like trick or treating and community parties are either cancelled or proceeding with limits on attendees. For pets, Halloween typically brings a variety of new sights and sounds that may create curiosity or worry. However your dog reacts to costumes and spooky decor, it’s important that they enjoy the holiday safely.
Do you typically dress up your pets for Halloween? If so, choose a costume that doesn’t restrict your dog’s movement, vision, or other senses. Watch for loose threads and avoid outfits with decorations that could come loose, like beads or dangling strands, as they are choking hazards. If you do take your dog out at night, make sure the costume is visible or use a glow in the dark collar in addition to lighting for yourself, for safety.
Looking for Halloween fashion inspiration? Care-A-Lot Pet Supply has a selection of dog costumes available, such as Captain America (pictured), Wonder Woman and Yoda in different sizes.
If this year’s Halloween brings your family a wealth of treats, you can be certain your dog will want a share. Chocolate, of course, is a definite no for your pet, as are raisins and snacks made with xylitol, a sweetener found in some brands of peanut butter. These foods are toxic to dogs and may cause nausea and vomiting, and may lead to long term health problems.
When your pet starts sniffing for something to eat, have a dog-friendly treat or two on hand to distract from the Halloween candy.
Your dog shouldn’t feel left out on Halloween. Treat them to a soft chew from Bil-Jac - choose from peanut butter, delicious fruit, or seasonal pumpkin flavors - or some Zuke's Mini Naturals with Pumpkin and Turkey.
If there are no plans to venture out this year, you may be more inclined to amp up your home decor. Extra lights and grander lawn displays may make up for canceled festivities, but always keep your pet’s safety in mind during setup. Decorations with tinsel and loose bits present choking hazards. Displays with strobe lighting and sound effects may also prove unnerving to a dog afraid of thunder and loud noises, so be judicious on what you pick up from the Halloween store and where you place them in and around your home.
If your pet suffers from Halloween jitters, our selection of calming products can help relieve the anxiety. Diffusers, calming collars, and supplements are available to soothe your pet when things get a bit scary. Also consider treating them to a special holiday toy like the Zippy Paws Brainey Pumpkin or Halloween Burrow Pumpkin.
