Origin
|
The shaggy sheepdog of Holland is also known as the Dutch Sheepdog. During the late
19th century, their numbers were abundant, but when the Border Collie was imported
into the country, their numbers dwindled dramatically. The breed was almost extinct
during the 1940s. In 1947, the "Breed Club for Nederlandse Schapendoes" was founded
and the breed was resuscitated. The Schapendoes is related to the Bearded Collie,
Polish Lowland, Puli, Briard and the Bergamassco. They are recognized by the UKC
and have been accepted for recording in the AKC Foundation Stock Service®.
