Cesky Fousek
The Cesky Fousek (prounounced ches-key ? fow-sek) is also known as the Bohemian
Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. This medium-sized pointer is built for endurance. The
head is lean, narrow and set high on the neck. The stop is moderate and the muzzle
narrows from the eyes to the nose. The almond-shaped eyes show a kind expression
and are dark amber to deep chestnut in color. The teeth should meet in a scissors
bite. The ears set high on the head, tapers toward the tip and lie flat against
the head. The medium-sized neck is well-developed and muscular. The chest is oval
and reaches down to the elbow joint. The belly of this breed should be somewhat
tucked up to facilitate free movement. The tail should be carried horizontally or
only very slightly upwards. It is normally docked by 3/5 of its length. Three types
of hair make up the coat: the undercoat, which is soft and dense; the topcoat, which
is harsh, coarse and close fitting; and the guard hairs, which are harsh and straight.
There is also longer and softer hair on the lower jaw and lips which form a beard.
The hair on the eyebrows point upward. There is also short hair on the forehead,
cranial region and cheeks. Permitted colors include dark roan with or without brown
patches, brown with ticked markings or brown with no markings.

Temperament
|
The Cesky Fousek is energetic, smart and willing to please. They are loyal, protective,
cheerful and friendly and gets along with children. All members of the family will
receive his love especially if they are holding the keys to the car, a leash or
a Frisbee™. This people oriented breed loves to be near their family and is
not happy if isolated from them. He is a hunting dog by nature and has been trained
and bred to work in the field, forest and water. They have a natural instinct to
go to point and take in scents. This noble and gentle dog is easy to train and make
an outstanding hunting partner. This breed is vocal and is a bit reserved with strangers.

Health Problems
|
As with most large breed dogs, the Fousek is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia.

Living Conditions
|
The Fousek should not live in an apartment. They need a large yard and an athletic
family.

Exercise
|
The Fousek needs lots of exercise and would do well with a person who hikes or jogs.
The tireless animal is very energetic. If they do not get enough exercise, they
could become restless and destructive.

Grooming
|
The coat of this breed is easy to care for. It should be brushed and combed regularly.
Check the feet if they have been exercising or working. Also, examine the ears.
They are average shedders.

Origin
|
The Cesky Fousek was used by nobility for hunting and lived in Bohemia. Though the
first standard was written in 1887, the breed nearly became extinct after World
War II. They were revived through crosses with German pointers, including the Stichelhaar.
The Cesky Fousek ranks second among today's hunting dogs. They are recognized by
the UKC and by the FCI in 1963.
