Caucasian Ovcharka
The Caucasian Ovcharka (Caucasian Mountain Dog, Caucasian Sheepdog) is a powerful
and strongly muscled dog. The head is large, wedge-shaped, and tapers slightly to
a blunt muzzle with high-set hanging ears, which may be cropped, and deep-set, oval
shaped eyes. The thick tail hangs down to the hock but may be carried above the
back as a sickle-shaped hook or ring when the dog is excited or moving. Three coat
lengths are accepted: the long coat, intermediate coat and the short coat. All are
double-coated and thick. Coat colors include shades of agouti gray, fawn, and reddish,
with white markings and often a dark facial mask. Solid white dogs with dark pigmentation
occur occasionally in the breed. Males are more massive and more powerful; females
are smaller and lighter in build. Honorable scars resulting from field work are
not penalized.

Temperament
|
The Caucasian Sheepdog is a spirited, intelligent and strong-willed guardian dog.
Their active defense reaction and strong territorial instincts make this breed very
suspicious of strange people and dogs. Unless properly socialized, the Sheepdogs
may become ferocious and show unmanageable tendencies. They are brave, alert, strong
and powerful. They have a strong urge to protect ?whether real or perceived - and
will do so with lightning-quick speed. Everything and everyone who belongs to the
family ? humans, dogs or pets ? is regarded by this dog as part of its family and
will be respected and fiercely protected. Do not leave this dog alone with children
because if play becomes too rough, the Caucasian Sheepdog will protect and do so
extensively. This breed requires an owner who can display strong leadership and
will provide socialization and training.

Origin
|
The Caucasian Ovcharka is a popular breed in Russia. The word "Ovchark" means "sheepdog"
in Russian. The Caucasian Sheepdog is a flock guardian which was developed in Caucasus
by local herders. Dogs similar to this breed have been protecting flocks in the
mountainous land mass between the Black and Caspian seas and neighboring Turkey
and Iran for over 600 years. Careful breeding in Germany safeguards the future of
this cautious and independent dog. Breeders are sure that they will be able to selectively
breed out some of the most fierce and protective personalities. They are recognized
by the UKC, FCI, CKC, NKC, APRI, ACR and have been accepted for recording in the
AKC Foundation Stock Service®.
