Braque du Bourbonnais
The Braque du Bourbonnais (pronounced brock-do-bor-bon-NAY) is a medium sized, short-haired
pointing dog. The skull is round and the muzzle is strong and broad at its base,
tapering slightly towards the tip. The broad nose has well-opened nostrils. The
upper lip covers the lower lip without forming too much of a fold. The teeth meet
in a scissor bite. The large eyes are rounded and come in hazel or dark amber depending
on the coat color. The muzzle is not too long and the topline is straight. The chest
is wide, long and deep and reaches slightly below the level of the elbow. Some in
this breed are born naturally tailless, but others should have their tail docked
at its base. The hair on the coat is fine, dense and short. Coat colors are white
with liver, brown or orange roaning. The Bourbonnais is strongly to moderately ticked
with some spotting. The same spot should not cover both eyes.

Temperament
|
The Braque du Bourbonnais is a calm and affectionate family companion; however,
when they are hunting, they are full of passion. Their intelligence allows them
to easily adapt to the most varied terrains and game. This pointing breed has a
remarkable ability to train easily and quickly. These people-oriented dogs are unhappy
when they are isolated from their family. They typically get along well with other
canines.

Origin
|
The Bourbonnais Point Dog originated in the Province of Bourbonnais, France. Breeders
in the 1930s wanted to impose other colors and a naturally short tail. The strict
selection nearly caused the breed to become extinct. During the 1970s, a team of
breeders decided to work for the survival of the Bourbonnais Point Dog. The present
state of the breed gives hope of a successful future. They are recognized by the FCI, CKC, NKC, UKC and they have recently been accepted for recording in the AKC Foundation Stock Service®.
