The Canine Chronicles Directory Austrian Black And Tan Hound The Austrian Black and Tan Hound (aka Austrian Brandlbracke and the Austrian Smoothhaired Hound) is an excellent hunting dog, known for its ability to hunt silently. The skull is broad and the muzzle is straight. The teeth should meet in a strong scissor-like bite. The nose is black and the ears are thin, set low and well back and turn inwards. The eyes are slightly round and are usually brown. The strong neck is medium in length with no dewlap. The chest is broad and deep and the back is long. The forelegs of this breed are long and straight. The feet are round, with well arched toes that fit close together. The long tail tapers and is slightly bent. There is usually coarse hair on the underside of the tail. The smooth coat is black with small light to dark fawn markings. Two fawn markings above the eyes must be present.
Temperament	This breed is a highly prized dog in Austria for its stealthy hunting skill and is loved among hunters.
Height, Weight	Height: 18-24" ; Weight: 33-50 lbs.
Health Problems	There are no known breed specific health problems.
Living Conditions	It is not recommended to keep a Black and Tan in the city. They dwell exclusively in the hands of hunters.
Exercise	Black and Tans need daily vigorous exercise.
Life Expectancy	About 10-12 years
Grooming	Occasional brushing is recommended. Care should be taken with the ears so that they are kept clean, odor-free and infection-free.
Origin	The Austrian Brandlbracke has the raciest body of the Austrian hounds, having longer legs and a lighter carriage than the Bavarian dogs to the north. They are considered a true descendent of Celtic hounds. As like the Swiss hounds, they hunt primarily in the mountains. This breed is recognized by the FCI and the UKC.
