The Canine Chronicles Directory Akbash Dog The Akbash Dog is a solid white flock guard dog with superior strength and a keen sense of hearing. The Akbash has a large head and powerful jaws. The ears are V-shaped with rounded tips and lay flat to the skull. The eyes are almond shaped and vary from light brown to very dark brown. The strong and muscular neck is medium in length and arches at the crest. It has a level topline. This breed has large and well-arched toes and the pads of the feet are thick, hard and dark. The tail is long, fluffy and reaches the hock. The Akbash has a springy nature to its gait.
Temperament	Though the Akbash dog is intelligent, courageous and loyal, they are NOT recommended for first time dog owners. This is a serious guard dog and they do best where they have a job to do. This breed is naturally dog aggressive and barrier frustration-aggression is common. It is best to have this dog live in the home with an older child. Constant supervision is necessary with this breed as trouble can occur when they are not. They are completely dedicated to their owners and devoted to any livestock placed in their charge. The Akbash is an independent dog with strong protective instincts. Owners should plan to provide good fencing. Early socialization is imperative, as even puppies will show a strong urge to protect.

Health Problems	Minor health concerns with this breed are hip dysplasia and Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD), a disease of the developing bones in young dogs. Purchase only from OFA hip certified stock.
Living Conditions	Akbashs should not live in an apartment. This breed needs lots of space. They are not very active indoors and do better with regular exercise and a large-sized yard.
Exercise	This breed needs plenty of regular exercise off lead.
Life Expectancy	About 10-11 years
Grooming	Akbash Dogs' hard coat is clean, non-matting and odor-free. Regular brushing is necessary during shedding. This breed does shed.
Origin	The name "Akbash" comes from the Turkish word "akbas" meaning "white head". This elegant and rare breed comes from the area we now call Western Turkey. They were bred by shepherds over 3000 years ago who wanted white-colored guarding sheepdogs. Their color helped to differentiate them from predators. The Akbash is a relative of the Komondor, Kuvasz, Pyrenean Mountain Dog and the Tatra Mountain Sheepdog. The United Kennel Club recognized the Akbash Dog in 1998.
