Local Delivery

Local Delivery is available to select locations in the Southeast Virginia and Northeast North Carolina area. The cost for Local Delivery is FREE if your order total is $49.00 or more. If your order total is less than $49.00 there will be a $5.00 delivery fee. If you are unsure if your zip code is included in our Local Delivery area, use the estimate shipping feature in your shopping cart to verify.

Local Delivery is only available Monday-Friday, it is not available on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. Orders will typically be delivered in 1-3 days. If you need your order sooner, please try our free Curbside Pick-Up option.

Whippet

Whippets are a lean, graceful, muscular, and hardy breed with an aerodynamically designed body. Their short smooth coat can be many colors, including black, fawn, blue, red, solid or mixed. The head should be long and lean, but flat on top. The muzzle should have a slight stop. The teeth should have a perfect scissor-like bite. The ears are small and rose-shaped. The strong neck should be elongated and the body moderately so. The deep chest is linked to long straight legs and thickly padded feet. The long tail should not have any feathering.

Temperament Whippets are a very gentle, tolerant, and affectionate breed. They are very calm and quiet in the home. They are both physically and mentally sensitive. They can be a bit independent. They are good with children who do not roughhouse or tease them. They are easy to travel with. They may be reserved with strangers and make good watchdogs. They will chase and kill cats and other small animals if they have the opportunity. This ultimate sprinter is unsurpassed by any other breed in his ability to accelerate to top speeds and with much dexterity. Can be difficult to housebreak.

Female Height: 18-21" ; Weight: 25-45 lbs.
Health Problems This breed is prone to skin problems and stomach upset.
Living Conditions The Whippet will do okay living in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. Whippets are calm indoors. They are sensitive to cold weather and should wear a coat or sweater during colder months.
Exercise This breed should have regular opportunities to run free in a safe area. They need brisk daily walks. Remember they are sight-hounds and will chase and kill small animals.
Life Expectancy About 12-15 years
Grooming This breed's short coat is easy to groom. Rub with a towel to keep the coat shiny. This breed has no doggie odor and is an average shedder.
Origin Whippets were developed in the late 1800s by crossing greyhounds with Italian greyhounds, terriers and various other sporting and coursing dogs. Miners in North-East England bred these dogs for racing, reaching speeds up to 37 mph, and coursing. Snapdog was given as a nickname to this breed due to their ability to kill rodents and rabbits with a sharp snap. Although Whippets are still used in racing and as a working dog they have primarily become companion dogs. They are recognized by the AKC and the UKC.
