Shiba Inu
The Shiba Inu has the look that toy manufacturers try to capture in the teddy bear.
This breed looks very much like the Akita. They are small and compact with a pointed
face, broad forehead and triangle-shaped ears. They are medium-boned and well muscled.
The eyes are small and dark and the teeth should meet in a scissor bite. They come
in all colors, including black with tan markings, red, or red with a little black
overlay. Cream-colored markings should be on the cheeks, muzzle, throat, above the
eyes and on the chest. The dense double coat is similar to that of the Husky. The
nose is black. The Spitz-like tail is thick and curled tightly over the back. It
is carried tightly in a ring or with a sickle-like curve.

Temperament
|
The Shiba is bold, affectionate, loving, kind, brave and clean. This playful breed
is charming and open. They do not bark often and bond closely with their handler.
This independent breed may be a bit reserved with strangers but make good companions
with children. Early socialization is necessary. They do well with other dogs and
cats if they are raised together, but can be aggressive towards same-sex dogs. Do
not let this breed around small non-canine pets. They make great travel companions.
Keep this breed on their lead. They are easy to housebreak.

Shibas will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They do best with
an average-sized yard. If you have a secure yard, the weather-proof Shiba can live
outdoors in the cold or warm weather. But do not leave them alone for too long as
they believe that they are part of the family.

to your exercise needs.

a firm brush to remove dead hair and only bathe when necessary. This breed is a
seasonal heavy shedder.
|
Origin
|
Winding its way through the southern regions, perhaps over land bridges from Korea
and China, Shibas originated in the mountainous landlocked areas of Japan where
the type has been known for nearly 3,000 years. The Shiba is a result of interbreeding
ancient types: the Sanin, the Mino and the Shinshu. They are recognized by the AKC
and the UKC.
