English Springer Spaniel
English Springer Spaniels are compact, medium-sized dogs with flat or wavy coats.
They have long pendant ears that when pulled forward, should reach to the top of
the nose. The back is level and about the same length as the height at the withers.
The head is strong and is in good proportion with the rest of the dog. The stop
is moderate with a groove between the eyes and disappearing in the middle of the
forehead. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite. The tail is normally docked.
They can be liver and white colored, black and white, blue or liver, and the white
dogs may have flecks of colored hair. There are two types of Springers ? field and
bench. The field is bred for hunting and field trial work. The benches are more
for shows and have more liver or black than white, and are calmer.

Origin
|
Known under the pseudonym of Norfolk Spaniel for a time, English Springer Spaniel
became the official name by 1900. Sir Thomas Boughey is credited with establishing
the modern credentials; his family's stud books on the breed dated from 1812. The
Springer is still a fine gunning dog, ideally suited for flushing birds, such as
pheasants. Many Springers show their skill in competition obedience. They are recognized
by both the AKC and the UKC.
