Origin In 1300, the first known recording of the "Spaniel's" existence was described by Gaston Phebus and English Cocker Spaniels are one of the oldest types of land spaniels. They can be traced back to 14th century Spain. Before the 1600s, all spaniels were categorized together. The larger breeds were used to spring game and the smaller breeds to flush out woodcock game. The names Springer and Cocker were derived from these uses. The Kennel Club of Great Britain separated these breeds in 1892. By the 1930s, the Cocker Spaniel was the most popular breed in the British Isles and remained so for nearly 20 years. Breeders in the United States soon began their own breeding programs and then in 1940, the Kennel Club divided the groups into the American and English Cocker Spaniels. They are recognized by the AKC and the UKC.
