American Water Spaniel
The American Water Spaniel is a small chocolate or liver-colored spaniel with a
curly or wavy outer coat and a protective undercoat. The coat is normally all dark,
but may have a small amount of white on the chest. The skull is broad and the muzzle
is square and smooth. The teeth should meet in a sissor-like bite. The AWS has dark
eyes and a muscular body. The eye color usually corresponds with the coat color.
The long nose is either dark brown or black. The long ears are covered with curls.
The long and feathered tail hangs in a slightly upward curve and is often used as
a rudder during swimming.

Origin
|
Dr. F. J. Pfeifer is credited with rescuing the American Water Spaniel in the 1920s.
Through the creation of written standards and a breeding club, Dr. Pfeifer's efforts
paved the way for AKC recognition. His own dog, "Curley Pfeifer", was the first
American Water Spaniel registered with the AKC. The AWS was developed as a hunting
dog. Its color was perfect for hunting as it could blend in with the fall foliage.
His small size made him easy to carry in a small boat as well as not tip the
boat over when he gets back into it. The American Water Spaniel is recognized by
the AKC and the UKC.
