American English Coonhound

The Canine Chronicles Directory

American English Coonhound

The American English Coonhound (commonly referred to as the Redtick Coonhound) combines speed and endurance to be a well-conditioned athlete. The head is broad and the skull is slightly domed and broad between the ears. The eyes are dark brown and the nose is black. The ears hang rather low and reach nearly to the end of the nose when drawn out. They are soft to the touch. Flews cover the lower jaw from the side view and the teeth meet in a scissor-like bite. The neck is muscular and moderate in length. The topline is slightly higher at the withers than at the hips. The tail is set high but is not hooked over the back. It is medium in length and has a light brush. The hard coat comes in red and white ticked, blue and white ticked, tri-colored with ticking, red and white, white and black.

Temperament The American English Coonhound is pleasant, alert, confident and sociable. They are fearless and loyal and get along with most everyone including children and other pets. Although they are fearless, they are quite friendly. This breed has a very loud bark and is quite vocal. They can be a bit dog-aggressive as well as reserved with strangers. Early socialization is needed with this breed. Do not let them off their lead in public as they may take off after an interesting scent. They love to tree animals. Though a bit high-strung, they love to please their owners.
Height, Weight Male Height: 24-26" ; Female Height: 23-25"
Weight: 40-65 lbs.
Health Problems There are no known breed specific health concerns with this dog.
Living Conditions This breed should not live in an apartment or the city. They prefer to be outdoors and should have lots of acreage where they can run free such as on a farm. They love to bark and are not well-suited for areas with close neighbors.
Exercise The American English Coonhound should live on a farm where it will give itself enough exercise on its own.
Life Expectancy About 11-12 years
Grooming The American English Coonhound's short coat is easy to care for. Brush about once a week.
Origin The American English Coonhound is US bred and grown. They are descendants of English Foxhounds and New World Virginian Hounds. They were first named the English Fox and Coonhound as they hunted fox by day and raccoons by night. Back during the early 1900s, all treeing coonhounds were called English which included both the Treeing Walker Coonhound and the Bluetick Coonhound. They were considered the same breed and only the coat colors separated them. The heavily ticked dogs split off from the English and the Bluetick Coonhound and were recognized as a separate breed in 1945. They are recognized by both the AKC and the UKC.
Group AKC Hound, UKC Scenthound
