Cooling Down Your Pet in Hot Weather
It’s hot outside! These peak summer days have us cranking up the AC or reaching for a glass of ice water, yet we’re called to enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. If we find it difficult to withstand the heat, imagine what it must be like for our pets. Dogs and cats don’t sweat as humans do, so it’s up to us to help our pets find relief from high temperatures.
Cool Down
Planning a trip to the beach or a favorite park with your dog? Watch the forecasts. Early morning makes for a cooler outing for your pet. Before you go, consider putting a treat in their chew toy and freezing so they’ll have something cold to gnaw on during the day. Bring an umbrella if there are no shady spots for your pet to rest.
At home, your pets can beat the heat using a simple kiddie pool with cool water. Add a few favorite playthings to keep them company. Care-A-Lot Pet Supply has an amazing selection of pet toys suitable for outdoor spaces.
Drink Up
If your pet is dehydrated, telltale signs will alert you to remedy the situation:
-
Panting: Pets pant to cool themselves down as the temperature rises. Listen for heavier-than-usual breathing that could indicate their growing thirst.
-
Thick saliva: A thirsty dog may drool to excess, with saliva that almost looks like gel.
-
Skin elasticity: If you suspect your pet is dehydrated, perform a simple test of holding up a patch of their skin. If it doesn’t spring back into place after you let go, make sure they drink up.
As you spend time outdoors with your pets, keep plenty of water handy for them to drink (shop our collection of stainless steel and collapsible water bowls). At feeding time, it’s also a good idea to add moisture to your pet’s meals. Cats in particular get a good amount of water from food.
Care-A-Lot Pet Supply recommends dehydrated broths from The Honest Kitchen, and goat’s milk from Primal and The Honest Kitchen.
Severe symptoms of dehydration and overheating, such as vomiting and diarrhea, could require more than ensuring your pet is caught up on their water intake. Check with your veterinarian for signs that indicate further health problems.
