Norwegian Forest Cat

The Scratching Post

Norwegian Forest Cat

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a large breed of domestic cat. They have medium-long, dense fur with a ruff on their chest similar to the mane of a lion. Their double-layer, weather-proof coat is generally very soft. All coat colors are recognized but the most common pattern seen is tabby with white. This breed has a broad, triangular head with a straight muzzle. The ears are wide-set and are topped with tufts of fur similar to the Lynx. The eyes are large, expressive, wide set and are bright green. The substantial legs are wide set and are of medium length. They have long hair on the backs of their legs and between their toes for added warmth. Paws are large, round and well-tufted, with the front paws appearing to be ?toe out.? The tail is very long, bushy and plumed.

Temperament Though they may resemble the Maine Coon, they are different cats. The NFC is intelligent, robust and playful. It may be a bit reserved with strangers, but is usually gentle and friendly. They are not ?lap cats? but will quietly let you know when attention is needed. They are great climbers and love the outdoors. They bond to their owners, but are not overly demonstrative. Though they love to be petted, they do not require constant attention. This breed loves to climb trees or bookshelves. Some breeders say that you are able to teach the NFC to heel when taken for walks.
Weight Male 13-22 lbs.; Female 9-12 lbs.
Health Problems The Wegie is generally a hardy cat. Minor concerns include retinal dysplasia, Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and Glycogen Storage Disease Type IV. Make certain that you get a written health guarantee from your cat?s breeder.
Living Conditions This breed loves to enjoy a garden or a yard to exercise and hunt in. If you wisely keep your Wegie indoors, be sure to cater to its desire to hunt and need for play by providing a steady supply of interactive toys.
Exercise They are playful and active and enjoy playing with others and exercising itself. A tall, well-built cat tree for climbing and scratching is a must.
Life Expectancy 13 or more years
Grooming This breed sheds heavily twice a year ? once in the fall when they shed their summer coat and once in the spring when they shed their winter coat. During these times, daily grooming is necessary to keep seasonal layers of cat hair off everything you own and to keep your Wegie free of matting.
Origin Unlike other breeds with locations in their names, the Wegie truly did originate in Norway. It is a hardy, sturdy cat with a thick, heavy coat, well-equipped to survive in the harsh Scandinavian winters. These are the cats that were known to have explored the world with the Vikings, protecting the grain stores on land and sea, and which are believed to have left their progeny on the shores of North America as a legacy to the future.
