American Curl 
The American Curl is elegant, well-balanced, moderately muscled and slender rather than massive in build. The head is
moderately longer than wide with smooth transitions. The nose is moderate and straight with a gentle curve to the top of the
head. The muzzle is rounded with no pronounced whisker break. The chin is firm. The ears have a 90 degree arc of curl and
should not exceed 180 degrees. The eyes are walnut-shaped, slightly large, and are clear and brilliant. The tail is flexible,
wide at the base, and reminiscent of a luxurious ostrich feather boa. The coat comes in longhaired and shorthaired. Low-set
ears or ears with an extreme curl in the adult will be disqualified.

Temperament
|
The American Curl is distinguished by their unique ears that curl back in a graceful arc. The ears are similar to those of the
Lynx with long tufts fanning outward, giving the appearance of the swept-back look. Curls are very people oriented, faithful and
affectionate soul mates. They adjust remarkably fast to other pets, children and new situations. They tend to follow their owners
around in a dog-like manner and are very attentive to their owners. The quiet Curl?s curiosity and intelligence is expressed through
little trill-like cooing sounds. They maintain their kitten-like personality well into adulthood.

Health Problems
|
The Curl is a robust and resistant breed, but care must be used to avoid trichobezoar
(hairballs), especially in the long-haired group. Administer paraffin oil or cream of malt regularly.

Living Conditions
|
They adapt well to a small home but appreciate a yard or garden.

Exercise
|
You can find this cat sleeping up high somewhere
in a large salad bowl or patting your glasses as you try to read the paper. They are very active indoors.

Grooming
|
The Curl sheds little and requires hardly any grooming.

Origin
|
In 1981, a stray, long-haired black cat was on the streets in Lakewood, CA when Joe and Grace Ruga fed her a meal.
She moved in with the Rugas and was named ?Shulamith.? She is believed to be the original American Curl to which all Curls can
trace their pedigree. Litters can include kittens with curly ears and others can have straight ears as well as long and short-haired
specimens.
