Your Pet's Best Christmas Ever
You’ve finished all the Thanksgiving leftovers and taken down the fall cornucopia decor. No sooner has one holiday ended than it’s time to prepare for the next. We’re less than a month from Christmas, and if you plan well there’s plenty of time to ensure everybody - including the family pet - enjoys a happy holiday.
If this year marks your first celebration with your pet, all the more reason to make the time special. Your home’s environment will change along with the season, so it’s important to keep your pet comfortable and safe as you decorate and prepare.
The Perfect Gift
Will your dog or cat have a stocking? Is there space under the tree for their gifts? It would be nice if our pets could tell us what they want for Christmas, or else write a list. If you have your eye on a specific toy, or holiday garment you believe would look darling on your pup or cat, take a few minutes to consider how it will be received.
For example, if your pets aren’t used to wearing sweaters or costumes, it’s possible they might resist if you put one on. Likewise, a toy that squeaks may not work for a pet who’s skittish with sudden noises. You know your pet, so look for cues in behavior when they’re around certain pet items. Let that inspire you to shop for their gifts. You can browse our online store of pet supplies for anything you need for your pet.
Also, be mindful of gift wrapping. The idea of watching your beloved pet ripping through colorful gift paper festooned with bows and bells may inspire engaging snapshots for the ‘Gram, but it isn’t worth the risk to your pet’s health to gain likes and shares.
Your pet may not know when to stop, and get a bit of sharp-edged ribbon or a staple used to keep a bow together stuck in their paws. Keep the wrapping simple when collecting pet gifts for the tree. Help them unwrap their goodies and make sure everything is cleared away so there are no swallow risks.
Hello, Santa
Getting your pet’s photo taken with Santa creates a memorable holiday tradition for your family. If you live in the Hampton Roads area, you can check our Facebook page for Santa’s schedule at our stores.
Wherever you go, make it a soothing experience for your pet. Excessive stimulation could leave you fighting to control an excited dog. Bring along a comfort toy and a treat to help them through the session.
If your pet still resists despite your efforts to calm them, don’t force a photo. We know Santa loves all creatures, but your pet may not be aware of that. Unless they have done a photo before and behaved well, Santa is a stranger and could trigger your pet’s nerves if they feel uncomfortable.
Though your to-do lists fill up this time of year, savor the moments shared with your pets this holiday.
